How to Clean Ceramic Disc Cartridge

Knowing how to properly clean and maintain the ceramic disc cartridge inside of your tap will ensure that your tap continues to work efficiently and last much longer. If the ceramic disc cartridge is not maintained properly, limescale will start to build up which will restrict the flow of water from the tap. This will make your tap less efficient and you will need to look at replacing your tap much sooner than anticipated.

Prevent Limescale Build-up in Your Tap
What you need

Phillips screwdriver

Flat head screwdriver

Adjustable spanner

Vinegar

Water

Old toothbrush
Before you begin, make sure to switch off the water to avoid any mess.
Step 1 - Remove Tap Head

First, you will need to remove the tap head with the screwdriver and then you can remove the cartridge retaining nut.
Step 2 - Take out Tap Cartridge

Using an adjustable spanner, you can now take out the tap cartridge to prepare for cleaning.
Step 3 - Soak the Cartridge

Next, you need to soak the cartridge in a 50/50 water and vinegar solution. Let the cartridge soak in the solution for 10 minutes.
Step 4 - Clean Inside of Tap

While the cartridge is soaking, take your old toothbrush and gently clean inside the tap to remove any build up grime.
Step 5 - Rinse The Cartridge

After 10 minutes, remove the cartridge from the solution and give it a scrub with the toothbrush. This will remove any leftover limescale. Then you can rinse the cartridge in clean water and pat try with a clean cloth.
Step 6 - Re-Assemble Tap

Now that the cartridge is clean, you can place it back into the tap and replace the cartridge retaining nut. Finally, you can screw on the tap head making sure not to over tighten it.
