FAQ's
Encaustic effect tiles bring bold pattern and heritage charm into your home without the high maintenance of traditional encaustic tiles. Think eye-catching floors, standout splashbacks and hallways with real character. Here’s what to know before you choose.
What are encaustic effect tiles?
These are porcelain or ceramic tiles made to look like traditional encaustic tiles; the kind of patterned tiles you'd find in Victorian entrances, Mediterranean patios or hand-decorated artisan homes.
Original encaustic tiles were made by pressing coloured clays into the tile so the pattern ran all the way through. Beautiful, yes, but they require sealing, can stain easily and need ongoing care.
Encaustic effect tiles recreate the same look but with a printed or glazed pattern on the surface. That means:
- No sealing, even in wet areas
- Better stain and moisture resistance
- Easier installation
- A wider range of designs and colours
With encaustic effect tiles, you get the charm and history, minus the upkeep.
Which interior styles work with encaustic effect tiles?
Encaustic effect tiles are surprisingly versatile and suit more looks than you might expect:
- Heritage and period homes. Perfect for classic hallways, cottage kitchens and traditional bathrooms.
- Modern heritage. Pair them with shaker cabinets, and matt black or brass fittings for an old-meets-new style that feels fresh but rooted in history.
- Boho chic. Layer them with woods, textiles and mixed patterns. They add depth without overpowering the room.
- Mediterranean or Moroccan-inspired. Earthy tones, bold blues and geometric motifs work brilliantly for a sun-drenched feel (even on grey days).
Can encaustic effect tiles be used in showers?
Yes; just make sure you’re picking the right type. Porcelain encaustic effect tiles are best for shower walls and floors. They’re dense, hardwearing and water-resistant. Ceramic versions are fine for walls but not recommended for floors in wet zones
One thing to avoid is using glossy encaustic tiles on shower floors. They can get slippery. For wet areas, go for matt or slip-rated porcelain.
As always, proper drainage and waterproofing behind the scenes is essential for long lasting results.
